Bowties - From structural solution to signature detail

A wooden bowtie - also known as a butterfly key - was traditionally added across a crack or natural split to help stabilise the timber and prevent the opening from spreading further.

Because solid wood continues to respond to changes in temperature and moisture, bowties provide support while allowing us to preserve the natural character of the wood instead of cutting that section away.

But something interesting has happened....

What began as a practical woodworking technique has become a feature that many of our customers specifically ask for - even when the timber does not necessarily need one.

Each bowtie is individually shaped, carefully fitted and set into the surface by hand. It creates a beautiful contrast and leaves a visible reminder of the craftsmanship behind the finished piece.

Sometimes it serves an important structural purpose. Other times, it is simply there because it looks beautiful - and we think both are good reasons.
