Sometimes a piece of furniture begins with a practical need: a table long enough for everyone, shelving that fits a particular wall, or a cupboard with storage arranged just the way you need it.

At JJ’s Bones of the Earth, we handcraft solid-wood furniture in Hoedspruit for homes, lodges, restaurants and offices. Each project brings together the customer’s ideas, the requirements of the space and the natural character of the timber.

Working with the character of wood

The dining table pictured here shows how much the timber itself can contribute to a design. Its flowing grain and irregular edges give the tabletop a shape and appearance of its own.

When working with solid wood, we consider how these features can become part of the finished piece. Some customers prefer a live edge that follows the timber’s natural outline; others want straight edges and a more uniform shape. Both approaches leave room for the grain and colour of the wood to stand out.

We work with woods including Kiaat, Jackalberry, Knobthorn and Leadwood. The choice depends on the intended use, the look you prefer and suitable timber availability.

The detail beneath the tabletop

The base is one of our favourite features of this table. Intersecting timber supports and repeated slats create a striking pattern beneath the broad top, giving the piece character from more than one angle.

It is a useful reminder that custom design extends beyond the surface. The base, proportions and placement of the supports all deserve attention, alongside practical considerations such as chair positions and space for people’s legs.

These are the details worth discussing when planning a table for everyday use.

The detail continues beneath the tabletop, with intersecting timber supports and a slatted base that gives this custom table its distinctive form.

Planning a piece that works for you

Before deciding on a design, think about how the furniture will be used. For a dining table, consider how many people you would like to seat and how much room you need to move around it. For cupboards or shelving, think about what you want to store and which items should be easy to reach.

Photographs of your room, approximate measurements and a few inspiration images give us a helpful starting point. Sharing your budget and preferred timeframe also helps us discuss realistic options for the materials and design.

You do not need to arrive with a finished drawing. We can start with an idea and work through the details together.

Let’s discuss your project

Whether you have a particular piece in mind or are still exploring possibilities, we would love to hear what you need.
